(pics are coming soon!)
Day One: Wednesday, March 30th
Reading and Teaching in Alabama Correctional Facilities
The eight writers were broken into into 2 groups and brought into 2 different correctional facilities (veteran teachers and officers will also be present). Writers read from their own work, assign writing prompts, and field questions.
Day Two: Thursday, March 31st
Small Press Panel – Morgan 301, University of Alabama (6:00-8:00 pm)
The same eight writers participating in the correctional facilities engaged in a moderated panel discussing how the creative process is enhanced by editorial projects. The panel particularly emphasized how starting a press—no matter how localized or funded—strengthens existing writing communities and organically creates new ones, which in turn expands writers’ own artistic ranges. The pane was free and open to the public.
The panel was composed of the following eight poets: Carmen Gimenez Smith, William Allegrezza, Gina Myers, Randall Horton, Stephanie Anderson, Jenn McCreary, Whitney Holmes, and Stacy Kidd.
