		<description>I&#039;ve been in academia for 40 years (it&#039;s a confession, after all these years!) and grant writing is exactly as you describe--detailed, bureaucratic, and political--but it can also be collaborative, provide much needed funds, and give you a level of independence you didn&#039;t expect.  

I&#039;ll also share an old joke:

What&#039;s the worst thing that can happen with a grant application?  That you don&#039;t get it.
What&#039;s the second worst thing that can happen with a grant application?  That you get it!

The idea is that once you have it, you have to produce whatever it is you said you&#039;d produce.

It&#039;s a challenge, but worth the effort.</description>
