About us
Slash Pine Press produces limited-run chapbooks of poetry and mixed-genre, and occasionally hosts off-the-beaten-path reading events, including the Slash Pine Poetry Festival held at the end of April.
The press envisions itself as an intellectual space where forms and intuitions make writing a process of risk and otherness—a space where the high stakes of creative inquiry make self-effacement impossible. Slash Pine fosters work that investigates the dimensions of place, whether construed as location or situation. Neither cynical nor rhetorically meek, the work is concerned with but not limited by the map; its logic is global, written against the grain of history and biography. And where there is a cut, a thick sap flows.
In April, we sponsor The Slash Pine Poetry Festival, which brings over forty national and regional poets together for a two-day extravaganza of poetry. The festival highlights the public and democratic nature of creative work, refusing to privilege one form or aesthetic over another, and presenting diverse voices in non-traditional, communally-accessible spaces. The festival itself spreads widely across a range of venues, emphasizing that art is intimately connected to place. We also have hosted other events such as undergraduate poetry exchanges, poetry hikes, and other marathon readings in Denver and Birmingham.
In Spring 2010, Slash Pine Press introduced an undergraduate internship program. Fifteen to twenty students from various disciplines design forthcoming chapbooks, plan poetry events, assist in grant writing, and participate in all press and event operations. At Slash Pine, undergraduate students take ownership of the work they do: they conceive and execute their own notions of book design, imagine and locate their own spaces for engaged performance, form and upload their own versions of a relevant internet presence. In short, Slash Pine not only offers undergraduates at The University of Alabama an experience of immersion learning: Slash Pine itself is immersed in and formed by the expertise, energy, and creativity of its own interns.
